Condolences

Condolence From: Nancy Keagan
Condolence: In recent months I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my Aunt Shirley. I’ve reflected back to my earliest memories of Aunt Shirley. I was able to recall a time when she, Uncle Gary and Jen lived in a house in Oshawa. At that time,  I was probably about seven years old. I can remember the house, the layout, the furniture and even the neighbourhood. What stands out in my mind is that Aunt Shirley checked in on us kids while we were playing; to see if we needed anything. Did we want something to eat, did we need a snack. I can remember that same evening when we were about to leave and Aunt Shirley was encouraging my parents to stay. She said “the kids are having fun”, “spend the night, there is lots of room”.

Perhaps a right of passage in your 40's? I'm sure I don't know! As I get older, I spend more time reflecting on growing up, the path I’ve been on, what I’ve learned, achieved and more to the fact, what’s important. How quickly time is passing!  With age comes the realization that priorities need to be reflected on throughout ones life. I think that Aunt Shirley knew the value of time and what her priorities were, earlier than many people. She certainly made me feel like family and friends were her greatest priority.

No one has ever been more welcoming and eager to spend time with people than Aunt Shirley. Who else would welcome you in their home at anytime of day? It didn’t matter if I was at Aunt Shirley’s doorstep at 7 am or while she was having dinner. Whether or not she was in her pyjamas having her morning coffee or entertaining, Aunt Shirley would always say, “come in”. She would ask, “How are things”? “What’s new” and 'How are the kids”? She loved company and always made me and the kids feel welcome.

Visiting my dad and Cheryl-anne always meant a visit with Aunt Shirley and Uncle Gary. We were always happy if Jen and the girls were there. Emma, Katie, Sarah, Amy, Shane and Mandy developed relationships over the years; just as we had with our cousin Jen as children. Aunt Shirley loved seeing the kids having a great time together while visiting up at the lake. It never occurred to me that going to visit my dad wouldn’t include visiting Aunt Shirley. I looked forward to coffee on her porch and conversations about what had happened between September and June. It was most often summer when we had the time to visit. Aunt Shirley was never to busy to catch up.

When I think about how Aunt Shirley put time with family and friend before anything else, I aspire to try and do the same. I realize that she had it “right” for a very long time. I admire her for this quality and appreciate that she shared it with me. I have learned a lot from Aunt Shirley. She probably never realized the impact her way of living had on me or others. I'm grateful that Aunt Shirley was a part of my life and my children's lives. As recently as our last visit to the cottage, Shane asked, “Do you think Aunt Shirley’s making cheesecake”? In spite of her health, you know she would have tried if she knew! Some of my life's favourite memories include Aunt Shirley's visit to Niagara where upon Cliff entertained us with Karaoke. Only a year ago Aunt Shirley visited the Niagara Region again where the kids enjoyed swimming and a wonderful evening out. Aunt Shirley was always happy to celebrate any occasion. She was so fun to be around.
Our deepest condolences go out to Uncle Gary, Jen, Emma and Katie.

Condolence: Dear Gary, Jennifer, Emma, Katie, and Shirley's extended family...my heart goes out to all of us, but especially her beloved family.

How extraordinarily fortunate we all were to have known Shirley. Everyone she came in contact with experienced the joy of being in the presence of that ever-present laugh and beautiful smile. Shirley touched the hearts of many, and will not be forgotten.

The world has lost a great soul, but Shirley left us with many, many warm and fun memories to keep us going. I feel blessed to have had her as my friend.
