Obituary for Dave McLean

McLean, David - Dave was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan in 1927 and moved east when he was twelve to Erin, Ontario to work on a family farm. As a young man he enrolled in the University of Toronto’s Chemical Engineering program from which he graduated with honours. His work life took him to Vancouver, Fort Gary, Manitoba, Toronto and eventually Lindsay where he was an Assistant Plant Manager at Viskase from 1978 until his retirement in 1986. During retirement, Dave acquired a Master Gardener certification from the University of Guelph and used his talent to maintain the flower gardens at Lindsay’s St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for 30 years, where he was also a church elder. Perhaps Dave’s greatest contribution to the town of Lindsay was his creation of the Lindsay Lilac Gardens. As a Founding Father, he continued to maintain the garden, for all to enjoy, until he reached the age of 91. Dave was an active member of the Kinsmen and Curling Clubs and for over 30 years he volunteered as Director and Treasurer for Arts Lindsay. He had an active lifestyle until his early nineties. Dave passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay on January 11, 2021. He is predeceased by his first wife, Betty (nee Clark), who he married in 1952 and who is the mother of their children, Steven (Sarah), David, Colin (Anna) and Shawn (Hollie). He is the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Nicole, and great granddaughter Callie. Predeceased by his second wife Frances (nee Newton) as well as his siblings Lyndon, Eleanor (Lindberg) and Jack. A service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held at a later time. A private family interment of cremated remains will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Lindsay. If desired, memorial donations may be made St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lindsay.
