Obituary for Edith Ehlebracht

Edith Elizabeth Ehlebracht (nee Geddes, nee Paterson) passed away peacefully in her 89th year at Extendicare in Lindsay on January 11, 2020. Forever supported by her loving family, Edith (aka “Gran”) is predeceased by her husband Henricus (Harry) Ehlebracht, her first husband William (Harry) Geddes, her son-in-law John McKeown and her granddaughter Rachel Cardoso. She is survived by her two sons David (Carolanne) and Colin (Alison) Geddes, daughter Jennifer McKeown, and stepdaughter Pat Ehlebracht. Her grandchildren Tracey and Sean Geddes and Christine Martinson; Casey, Erin and Liam Geddes; and Jay, Ryan and Tori McKeown, as well as a growing number of cherished great grandchildren are all deeply impacted by this loss.

Edith was born on April 15, 1931 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She and her first husband, and their children, lived in India for several years before immigrating to Canada in 1965. She settled in West Hill, Ontario and became a successful entrepreneur and business-woman and co-owned The Personnel Centre in Toronto until her retirement in 1995. Many people credit her for assisting them with obtaining their first employment. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, and never failed to have time for her family and many friends. She was always a generous and gracious hostess at both her home in West Hill, and at their trailer in Rosedale, Ontario, which she and Harry enjoyed for over 30 years during the summer months. She loved her time at the trailer, enjoying her dogs, swimming the current with her children and grandchildren, and allowing her fierce, competitive spirit to shine during summer games. Simply put, she was the quintessential mom, always giving of herself to her husband, children, grandchildren, and many friends without strings attached.

There will be a gathering to celebrate the lives of both Edith and Harry Ehlebracht on February 7th at the Pie-Eyed Monk (upstairs) at 8 Cambridge Street North, Lindsay, ON K9V 4C3, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Guests are welcome at any time to bring their thoughts and memories of Edith and Harry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) at the Ross Memorial Hospital (link attached). The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. Hainer and the staff at Extendicare, along with the nurses/staff of the ACU for all their compassionate and loving care of Edith during the later stages of her life.
