Obituary for Gwendolyn Ruth Drew (Parrott)

Drew, Gwendolyn Ruth (nee Parrott) April 9, 1935 – September 25, 2022

Born in Oshawa, Ontario, Gwen married Wayland Miller Drew in 1957. Together they raised four children – Scott (Sarah), Marda (Bill), Paula and Cynthia (Wendell) – with whom they shared their respect for nature and love of wilderness canoe tripping.

A published photographer (Brown's Weir, 1983) and coauthor of A Taste of Muskoka (1986), Gwen humbly took in stride her many accomplishments and contributions to the communities she called home (e.g., Bracebridge Historical Society and Couchiching Conservancy) but was happiest when surrounded by people.

Widowed in 1998, her ever-growing family and circle of friends attests to her aptitude for building and sustaining meaningful relationships. Gatherings hosted by “GG” always included a feast she’d lovingly prepared and beautifully presented.

Gwen was unabashedly proud of her grandchildren Graeme, Lauryn (TJ), Helen (Michael), Ben, Arthur (Destiny), Richard, and great grandchildren Oliver and Hudson. “GG” cherished her Kennedy family; son-in-law Ross (d.2009), his children David (Lisa), Tricia (Craig), Jenna, and their children Liev, Bella, and Sam.

Predeceased by her brother Ted, Gwen is lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Marian and niece Lesley (Yaan).

Gwen was a woman characterized by generosity and grit whose love of life shone through right to the very end. In her last days, she sought comfort in the people around her, watching the clouds and birds outside her window and hearing the Psalms read aloud from her KJV bible.

Though dearly missed, her unbridled laugh will always bring cheer to those who remember her enjoying a good story or rolling a Yahtzee.

“GG” was ever grateful for kindness shown her. The family would like to thank the many caring staff members of RMH Palliative Care Unit who supported our beloved “GG” and us through these last three months.  Private family services will be held.  In memory of Gwen the family encourages you to spend time in nature. For those who wish to make a donation they may be made through Mackey Funeral Home by cheque to a charitable organization of your choice.
