Obituary for Jimmy MacDonald

James (Jimmy) Hugh MacDonald died peacefully on September 14, 2023.  He was 93 years old, born on June 20, 1930 in Moycroft, Elgin in Scotland.  He was devoted to his wife of 72 years, Helen (Netta) MacDonald and his 4 children, Sheilagh, Helen, Jane (deceased) and Hugh.  In addition, he leaves 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren with a 17th due next year.  His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a constant source of joy to him.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, wonderful memories and a profound sense of what it means to be family.  While he was never one for sentimentality, you always knew he was proud of his family’s accomplishments.  Although he’d lived in Canada for more than 50 years he was always a true Scotsman and a real Moycrofter, right to the end.

When he turned 16 and was old enough to apply for apprenticeship he went to work for British Rail. He started as a Cleaner, progressed to Fireman then to his dream job of Engine Driver. He worked for British Rail as an engine driver until approximately 1964. He then, for a short time, worked for the local Gas Board.  He emigrated to Canada in 1966 and worked for Correctional Services of Ontario, specifically the Don Jail and the East Detention Centre, until his retirement.

He was a lover of the outdoors and an avid hunter and fisherman.  There was rarely a time when he didn’t have a dog at his side.  A celebration of his life will take place at 1 pm on October 25, 2023 at Mackey Celebrations Inc, 35 Lindsay Street North, Lindsay, Ontario  K9V 1T3.  Click HERE to Watch service
