Karen Rosemary Bassie

Karen died peacefully, surrounded by family on August 21st, 2022. Karen was the cherished wife of Peter Bassie, loving mother of Michelle Bassie – Brown (Ernie McElrea) and Elizabeth Browne (Patrick), caring sister of John Lockard (Ghislaine Gauthier) and Jim Lockard (Jenny), adored grandmother of William Brown, Kurt Brown, Mackenzie Browne, and Owen Browne. Karen, daughter of Mary and Eugene Lockard, was born June 9, 1948 in Galt Ontario. Karen spent her youth in Ormsby, North Hastings with brothers Jim and John. In 1969 Karen married Peter Bassie, eventually settling in Erin/Hillsburgh area(s). In 1979 Karen opened The Pantry Shelf, a bake shop and tea room in Hillsburgh famous for its butter tarts, pies and delectable lunches. After 31 years Karen retired The Pantry Shelf and lived in Peterborough for the last 8 years. The family would like to thank all the staff at St Joseph’s at Fleming, Peterborough for care of Karen in her final months. A celebration of life for Karen will be held in spring of 2023.
