Obituary for Leo Groenendyk

GROENENDYK, LEO JOHN: It is with profound sadness that we announce that Leo went to be with his Lord and Saviour suddenly, with family at his side, at Toronto Western Hospital on May 26th, 2021, at age 68.

Leo was the devoted husband and companion of Lori, loving father of Kathryn (Chris), Victoria (Drew), Jordan (Emma), Thomas (Alana), and Jenna (David), caring Opa to Kayley, Colby, Rosalind, Ada, Charlotte, Jude, Preston, and Madison, and brother to Linda (Frank). Leo will also be deeply missed by many extended family and friends.

Leo was born in London, ON, to Joe and Niesje Groenendyk. He went on to own and operate Birch Point Marina on Sturgeon Lake for more than 30 years, becoming a Master Mechanic and later co-owning Mechanics on the Trent before “retiring”. He was an avid boater and cherished travelling and camping with his family. Leo was always a kid-at-heart. He had a youthful love of Disney World and always looked forward to his annual family trips there. He was a humble and generous man that was eager to help people—even right to the end through being an organ donor. He was kind, patient, reliable, trustworthy, fun-loving, and a mentor to many. His steadfast wisdom and support was always present. He truly enjoyed working with his hands—making and fixing—and was a life-long curious soul. He was an active member of Fairview Baptist Church and had a strong, quiet faith.

We will miss you beyond words, Leo.

A visitation drive-thru will be held at Fairview Baptist Church in the parking lot on Saturday, June 5th from 10am - 1pm. During this time, the family would welcome a shared memory or story about Leo. A private, family interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations in Leo’s honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and/or The Krembil Brain Institute at Toronto Western Hospital (UHN) would be greatly appreciated.
