Obituary for Peter Stuart Walker

It is with heavy hearts the family of Peter Walker announce his passing on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at the age of 76. Proud and devoted father of Sara (John) and Janice (John). Missed by his brother Brian (Angela). Predeceased by his parents John and Jennie Walker.

Peter was born in York, England on November 16, 1944 to John Peter Walker and Jennie Harris. He became an electrician, starting his five-year apprenticeship with J. Sharp & Co. at age 15 and graduating four years later with a certificate in City & Guilds Electrical Installation from the Central College of Further Education in York. For a while he worked for British Rail in the Maintenance Department & Production Department on third rail electrics.

When he was 25 he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he worked for Canadian Comstock Co., installing new equipment. A year later, he moved to Levack, Ontario, where he worked as an electrician installing hoist and surface equipment in the mines for International Nickel Co. (INCO).

In 1972 he moved to Lindsay, Ontario after obtaining work at the Trent Rubber plant as a maintenance electrician. In 1974, he began working as an Electronic Technician for Union Carbide. That same year, his daughter Sara was born. Two years later, he welcomed a second daughter, Janice, and officially became a Canadian citizen.

In 1981 Peter began work at General Motors in Oshawa. His work here brought him into the field of computers and robotics, and he became primarily responsible for maintaining the electronics that kept the assembly lines running until he retired in 2006 at age 62.

From 1961 to 1969, Peter served the Royal Observer Corps, a civil defence organization intended for the visual detection, identification, tracking and reporting of aircraft over Great Britain. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1971, proud of both his own plane spotting and his father’s service in World War Two.

Peter also served the Lions Club in Lindsay for over 10 years. He was an avid photographer all his life, gardener, reader, and history buff. He often enjoyed performing magic tricks for family members.

He will be dearly missed by his daughters, niece, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

Family and friends will honour and celebrate Peter's life at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to the Royal Canadian Legion would be appreciated. Donations and condolences can be made through Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay or online at www.mackeys.ca
