Obituary for Sophie Mary Blondin (Hlynsky)

BLONDIN (nee Hlynsky), Sophia Mary - February 7, 1924 – February 22, 2022. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sophie at Victoria Manor, in Lindsay, ON, after celebrating her 98th Birthday earlier this month. Sophie grew up in Pointe-Saint-Charles, Montreal on her family farm. She was a free spirit who loved the outdoors and all animals. She married her beloved husband Claudomir Blondin (predecease 1967) on October 18, 1947, at the age of 23. They welcomed their first son Jean-Claude June 1948 and their second son André November 1949 (predeceased January 2016). Sophie loved cooking and baking. She was known for her perogies, meat pies, ragu and loved making dozens upon dozens of cookies at Christmas time. In February 1961, their third son Gilles was born. They enjoyed going camping as a family (extended family included) for two weeks every year in the eastern provinces. In 1970s they moved to Thornhill, Ontario, where Sophie worked at Willow Nurseries and then at Thornhill Nurseries. She liked to knit slippers, hats, mitts and even knit her neighbours dog a jacket and booties! She was very social and a pillar in the community, always helping others. After she retired, she moved up to Lindsay, Ontario to be closer to her sons. Her son, André, then moved in to take care of her. She would welcome everyone into her home, often feeding the neighbourhood cats and letting them come inside! She would tell everyone to call her “Grandma Sophie”. She attended all her grandchildren’s plays and recitals and was very excited in 2005 to become a great-grandmother. She loved to display pictures of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all over their house. Sophie will be missed dearly by all her friends and family, but especially her sons, J.C. (Lori) and Gilles (Vickie), her great-niece Janet (Frank), her grandchildren, Kenny (Cheryl), Dominic, Sophie (Richard), Amanda (Dan), Chrissa, Holly, Angela (Eric) and a, her great-grandchildren, Noémie, Maxime, Hunter and Sophie. Sophie was an amazing person, with an incredible soul. Her presence made the world a better place, her gorgeous smile will never be forgotten. A huge thank you to all the caregivers at Victoria Manor for taking amazing care of Sophie for the last six years. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2022.
