Obituary for Ross Tapscott

William Ross Tapscott

It is with great sadness, that the Tapscott family announces the passing of their husband, father and grandfather, Ross Tapscott on Sunday, October 29, 2023.

Ross was born on October 1, 1937 on Lone Oak Farm in Markham, Ontario, beloved son of William “Bill” Tapscott and Eileen Coxworth. Ross lived a full and happy life, first on the farm with his faithful companion Buster and his little red wagon, racing through the fields at a very young age to meet up with his lifelong friend Jack Haynes. Together they shared many adventures. In his teens, his adventures included many mischievous antics with his uncle Dick Tapscott and uncle Fred Tapscott, their stories are legendary!

When Ross was 15, he had his heart stolen by the love of his life, Patsy Prince. They married on October 19, 1957, at St. Andrew's United Church in Markham; 18 days after his 20th birthday. They spent the first 10 years of their marriage building a life together. In 1967 they welcomed their first born, Sherri, daughter Teresa arrived in 1970 and son Warren in 1974.

Ross had a lifelong passion for engines, how things worked, how to fix them and how to make them faster. This led to his love of repairing cars, snowmobiling and motorcycling. One day he came home with a bucket of parts, looked like something he had picked up on the side of the road. It was in fact a motorcycle.  Ross built it into a beautiful bike and enjoyed many a Sunday ride on it. Snowmobiling took him on many adventures with his friend Euart Avison, “the Avison boys”, Doug Saunders, son-in-law Phillip Redshaw, Bruce Grove and grandson Scott.

Ross was a licenced mechanic and a gifted sales representative. His career included British America, Gulf Oil and Petro-Canada. One of his proudest achievements in his career was receiving the Hungry Bear award from Petro-Canada as top sales person, several times in his career.

Up until this past Sunday, Ross devoted his entire life to his family, it meant everything to him. There were many family vacations across Canada, to Thunder Bay and Vermont with the Latimer family and Sunday drives with fabulous picnics made by mom. Right to the end he wanted to make sure each and everyone knew how much they were loved.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Patel at Ross Memorial for guiding us through the difficult decisions with great care and patience. To the nurses who cared for Ross right to the end, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us 4 precious final hours with dad, your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Ross is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia, his three children and their spouses, Sherri & Phillip Redshaw, Teresa & Stephen Sutter, Warren & Danielle Tapscott and grandchildren Scott Redshaw & Ellen Wood, John Sutter and Georgia Tapscott.  Step-grandfather “AJ” to Jamie Redshaw and Kristy Boyd. Sister-in-law Jackie and Herb Kingston, nephew’s Glenn Watts & Shelly Hopper and family, Jamie & Bernadine Kingston and family, niece Valerie Watts.  Pre-deceased by his parents, Bill & Eileen Tapscott, his sister Linda, and brother-in-law Gary Watts and in-laws Isobel & Jack Prince. Ross will be missed greatly by his friends and extended family.
